Well it turned out to be a great weekend for both the Women and Men of Castlewarden.

Women’s Update:

Intermediate Foursomes

A great start to our inter-club match season with a win for our Intermediate Foursomes Team against Killeen. We won both home matches; Ruth Lalor and Roisin Harpur won 5&3, and Emer McDonagh and Marguerite James won 2&1. In the away matches, Michelle Masterson and Madeleine Mulrennan won 3&1 to secure the winning point and the overall victory 3-1.

A special mention for Emer O’Flaherty and Maire Spierin who battled hard but unfortunately their match just didn’t go our way.

Overall a great win and we progress onwards to round 2. Congrats to team managers Nuala Downes and Janice Fleming and thanks to all the supporters.

Carton Cup:

Well done also to our Carton Cup team who hold a 3-2 lead over Westmanstown with the return leg to be played at home this Sunday. Our winning points came from Ann Marie Pryal, Mary Brien and Patricia Hinch. Gillian Shanley and Mary Clynes narrowly lost out in their matches. Well done to team managers Breda Sheedy and Dorothy Kinirons. Best of luck in the home leg!

Men’s Update

Jimmy Bruen Shield:

Castlewarden’s men came up against Baltinglass on Sunday in the first round of this year’s Jimmy Bruen Shield with 2 matches at home and 2 away.

At home, Alan Jones & Dave McDonagh had a comfortable 6&5 win while Damien Brennan & Sean Dunne despite some great golf lost out narrowly on the 17th.

Away from home, Peter Sinnott & Stephen O’Brien lost out to the number 1 pairing from Baltinglass and that left John O’Toole & Michael Merriman left to try and secure a win in their match to force a playoff... which they did on the 17th.

With the match tied at 2-2, and Baltinglass having home advantage this meant the playoff would be played there. Pairs were selected prior to kick off and John & Mick would take on the pairing who beat Peter & Stephen. After the first playoff hole was halved our lads prevailed on the next hole for a fantastic win.

Next up is Carlow to be played by 12th May.

A great performance all round.
